When a Rochdale driver bought her woman's car insurance earlier this year, I wonder if she realised that she would soon achieve a lifelong ambition and drive a 19-tonne lorry.
The 58-year-old birthday girl was given the driving present by her husband, who knew she would prize that experience way above fine jewellery or swimming with dolphins.
He said, "She's always wanted to drive an articulated truck for as long as I've known her. It's her dream and I wanted to make it happen. She had no idea - she thought she was going horse riding."The legal cashier was watched by her husband and daughter as she roared across the tarmac at Manchester Training in Middleton.
She said, "I'd like to drive a big double lorry in the Australian desert. We've applied for passports for the first time, so I suppose that will be next year's birthday present."
Her driving instructor, the first registered woman at the Construction Industry Training Board, said, "[She] was really confident. If she'd got her provisional lorry driver's licence we would have taken her on the road immediately."As it is, give her a couple more lessons and she can have a job. It just proves that anything men can do women can do better."
A CoverGirl spokesperson said, "Get your licence, get your woman's car insurance and off you go. We really can do anything we want to - what a great story."
