A Suffolk lady has warned motorists to check the small print after she learnt the hard way that her woman's car insurance policy did not provide comprehensive cover abroad.
She had gone abroad with the understanding that her motor insurance would provide cover should her car be damaged in a collision; unfortunately, this turned out not to be the case.
The woman was just at the end of a family holiday in Italy when her car was involved in an accident on a motorway. When she telephoned her woman's car insurance provider, she discovered that "we were covered for everything apart from accidents."
With the damaged car taken to a recovery yard and no replacement vehicle, the family were forced to take trains and buses across Italy, pay for plane tickets to Gatwick then be transported to their home in Lowestoft.
The lady said: "We managed to grab a few things but everyone was in a state of shock and just wanted to get home. It was a real nightmare and I would hate other people to have to suffer a similar experience."
She urged other motorists to check that their woman's car insurance policy offers comprehensive cover in Europe so that they could avoid such as situation.
