Ladies who smoke behind the wheel could be risking their woman's car insurance under the new version of the Highway Code.
For the first time The Highway Code includes smoking as a potentially distracting activity which could result in a prosecution for driving without due care and attention; a prosecution which is likely to put up the cost of motor insurance quotes.
The Road Safety Minister explained: "If you're lighting up with one hand and have a fag in the other hand then you've obviously not got any hands on the wheel."
Also, safety experts have warned that smokers could endanger themselves and their woman's car insurance if they drop a lit cigarette in the car and panic.
However, not all believe that smoking whilst driving is a road safety issue.
A spokesperson for smokers' rights group Forest said: "There's not a shred of evidence that smoking is a cause of accidents, or any more of a distraction than changing a CD or air-condition controls.
"They're treating adults as if we're all stupid.
"Our concern is that they say it's just a guideline now but within a year or two there will be people who say 'let's ban smoking while driving'."
