Women are at double the risk of having an accident, and face rising female car
insurance premiums, if men moan at them while they are driving, a
study has shown.
Computer testing on female students revealed the finding. Women who were told men are better drivers were twice as likely to hit a pedestrian on the road during a driving exercise.
Psychologist Dr Courtney von Hippel, research leader, said people can experience mental difficulty when confronted with negative stereotypes, causing deterioration in tasks being carried out.
The other half of the test group were not told about any sex differences but it was explained the driving simulation would check mental processes during driving.
Only about a quarter of this group hit the pedestrian, while almost half of the 'men are better drivers'-stereotype group caused an accident.
The mildest of rebukes, or simply tutting, while a woman is driving or
manoeuvring on the road can cause errors that can cause an accident and
higher girls car
insurance costs. The study was published in an Australian journal.
