Female motorists risk attracting car thieves by leaving handbags, clothes and make-up visible inside their vehicles - and also highlighting the need for comprehensive women car insurance.
The discovery was revealed in new research showing more than half of women use cars as 'wardrobes on wheels', draping their mobile closets with belongings such as spare clothes, shoes, gym and exercise outfits.
Vehicle crime accounts for around a third of crime. When car windows are smashed or locks forced, the whole experience causes immense distress and inconvenience to victims.
CoverGirl Car Insurance Services is advising women to not leave their belongings on display in cars, after a study showed, on average, women leave four or more items worth about £130 in their vehicles.
To help cut car crime and any opportunities for it, a spokesperson for CoverGirl said, "A thief who spots a handbag on a parcel shelf or car seat may think it's fair game to break into the car."
There is also a risk of road accidents when a car is used as a 'mobile cupboard' and clutter such as books, toys and toiletries can roll under foot pedals while driving.
The CoverGirl spokesperson said: "It makes sense to have good comprehensive women car insurance cover - and worth checking that your house contents insurance covers items away from your home."
