Motor insurance companies have provided low cost woman car insurance for a long time thanks to ladies' safer driving habits. However, this good safety record has been seen in action recently, as a judge says that he seldom sees women in court over dangerous driving offences.
Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC commented that just six out of 64 serious car accidents in Yorkshire were caused by women and condemned young men as being the responsible party in many of these cases.
He said: "Young male drivers and their passengers have emerged as the most likely victims of fatal road smashes through reckless and illegal driving.
"It may well be that to put a young male between 17 to 20 behind the wheel of a very powerful and potentially lethal piece of machinery is irresponsible."
He went on to suggest that the driving age limit should be increased to 18 and that young drivers should be restricted as to the type of cars they can drive.
He added that motor insurance firms should become involved in pricing young driver car insurance so high that it would make it "virtually impossible" for teenage men to take to the roads.
Judge Durham Hall has also been speaking out about the devastation that can be caused by driving "like a lunatic" and has recommended that sentencing be made harsher for those who are found guilty of dangerous driving.
He explained: "If you drive dangerously at the lower end of the scale and kill somebody the penalty has been increased to a maximum sentence of 14 years.
"However, if you drive dangerously at the maximum end of the scale and maim somebody seriously but they survive, the maximum penalty remains two years in prison."
Lee-Anne Bass of woman's car insurance firm CoverGirl Car Insurance Services said: "Although I think some of Judge Durham Hall's ideas are going a bit far - such as making motor insurance so expensive only a few could afford it - it is good that someone is speaking out about the young driver accident rate."
