Recent research by Liverpool Victoria has revealed that women worry about speeding when they lend their vehicle to someone, perhaps because of a possible impact on their car insurance quotes.
The motor insurance company found that while most women do not trust others with their car because of speeding, men were loath to lend their car to a driver who they thought was inexperienced.
Other reasons that motorists gave for worrying when they handed over the keys to someone else included if they thought the driver might be reckless or easily distracted, if they have trouble parking and a history of road rage.
When Liverpool Victoria researchers asked who drivers would least trust with their car, best friends came out top. This is particularly true of younger drivers, 30% of whom gave this answer. Many of these motorists reported that they wouldn't trust their siblings with their car either, suggesting that they recognise the fact that young drivers have a high accident rate.
A spokesperson for Liverpool Victoria commented: "The dilemma faced by motorists seems to be how to tell their friends and loved ones that, despite trusting them with most other things in life, they don't trust them to drive their cars.
"However, it is encouraging to see that the British motorist does not hand over their keys easily and is conscious of the potential risks."
He went on to advise drivers who are planning to lend their car to someone to get car insurance quotes for comprehensive insurance with their friend as a named driver, as this is the only way to ensure full cover.
"Otherwise any niggles of doubt you had about letting them take your car may come back to haunt you," he warned.
