Figures have not been revealed as to whether the Swiftcover advert featuring Iggy Pop was successful in selling women's car insurance, but since it has emerged that the insurance provider do not cover drivers who work in the entertainment industry the ad campaign has had to be pulled.
In the advert it was insinuated that the aging rock star actually had a Swiftcover insurance policy, but following a dozen complaints from viewers and investigation by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) the issues of misrepresentation have been uncovered.
A spokesperson for the ASA said, "We noted that Swiftcover was using
a well-known musician and entertainer, Iggy Pop, to promote their online
car insurance service, but that their website specified they did not cover
drivers working part or full-time in entertainment."
A spokesperson for AXA UK, owners of Swiftcover, is reported to have commented
that the advert did not make reference to Pop's profession and that it
was his reputation for living a full and hectic life that was the reason
for his casting.
They said that he was an actor promoting their car insurance product as if he were a customer.
A spokesperson for CoverGirl, specialist providers of women's
car insurance, said, "CoverGirl is a dedicated online car insurance
company and we rely solely on the reputation of our cheap quotes and great
service to generate business."
