You'd think the fall in women's car insurance rates would have encouraged more ladies to take up driving jobs, but in fact the majority remain largely male-dominated to this day.
This is nowhere better illustrated than in the haulage industry. According to trade magazine Fleet Transport, haulage in Ireland employs just three percent female truckers - and the result is typical of many other countries.
"The Irish road transport industry is not alone in being male-dominated," said Fleet Transport's editor. "It's a situation which is reflected in most European countries."
However, haulage firms interviewed for the report said that they would welcome women into the industry if more applied to be truckers.
"Female driving skills are reflected in the price of women's car insurance, so it's easy to see why haulage firms are eager to recruit more ladies," said Gemma Turner, spokesperson for the cheap car insurance experts at CoverGirl.
