Handbag cover, this season's must-have item

It's good to know that many womens insurance policies provide handbag cover, but it's not so great to realise the extent of handbag thefts from cars.

Research carried out by Diamond, the women's car insurance provider, indicates that more than 400,000 British women had handbags stolen from their car in the past year. The value of those handbags totalled almost £178 million.

It sounds unbelievable that the average value of a handbag could be over £431, as the survey has shown, but add the cost of the bag itself to its likely contents; a mobile phone, an i-pod, a purse, keys, make-up, etc., and it soon adds up.

Basic advice suggests you should never leave your bag unattended in your car, in fact police advise vehicle owners and their passengers to remove all belongings so as not to provide temptation for thieves.

Even if you know a bag and its contents is worthless, a thief is likely to break in to investigate items in a vehicle for himself.

A Covergirl womens insurance spokesperson said, "Our car insurance policies can be tailor made to give you the cover you require, but to avoid the hassle of car crime we would always advocate taking your valuables with you when you leave your car."
