Female car insurance and the most competitive quotes

According to the latest figures from the Home Office, men are responsible for 97% of dangerous-driving offences and 83% of speeding convictions. As a result, female car insurance is usually quite a lot cheaper than the male equivalent.

During the last few years a number of female car insurance brands have sprung up to specifically target the market. Diamond, part of the Admiral Insurance group, has been specialising in women's insurance since 1997 and has more than 200,000 customers. Last year, Direct Line founder Peter Wood joined forces with HBOS bank to launch First Alternative Woman, while a number of intermediaries, such as girlmotor.com and mismotor.co.uk, have also emerged.

But although these companies target female drivers, they may not offer the best quotes. Richard Mason, insurance specialist at price comparison service moneysupermarket.com, says: 'Many of these companies market themselves as offering the best female car insurance, but that is usually all it is - marketing. The products are more-or-less identical to those offered by mainstream lenders and are not always going to be the cheapest.'

Recruitment consultant Louise Moore switched from her Diamond Insurance policy to Tesco, slashing her insurance bill by around £150. She says: 'I originally went with Diamond because it seemed like a good deal and I liked the idea of it being focused on women. However, after checking out a number of different quotes, I decided to switch because I could get a similar policy at a cheaper price.'
