Peugeot in the early years
Many years before Peugeot customers were able to shop for online car insurance, Peugeot was producing bicycles at the end of the 19th century, thanks to a man called Armand Peugeot.
In fact, in 1882, the first Peugeot penny farthing ("Le Grand Bi") was introduced to commuters and established the company as a qualified producer of cycles. Unfortunately, the bike and car company later went separate ways in 1926.
The first Peugeot car, created in 1889, was a three-wheeled vehicle that was powered by steam but as time went by, steam became the less favourable option of power because it took so long to prepare the car. In 1890, Peugeot introduced its first vehicle that was powered by a Daimler engine, a car that also had four wheels instead of three.
This major breakthrough in motoring saw Peugeot produce a further twenty-nine cars in the following two years - all given different Type numbers, such as the Type 12 which was produced in 1895. It was these major developments in the company that led the way for Peugeot to move on into the motorcycle industry, creating their first model in 1903.
Wartime Peugeot
During the First World War, Peugeot concentrated on arms production and began producing huge numbers of military vehicles, bicycles, tanks and shells. Following the wartime period, Peugeot once again turned its hands to car manufacturing and produced the 201 in 1929; it was a car that would set the standard for other models in the future with its three digits, one of which being a zero.
When war once again broke out in 1939, the factories that had seen Peugeot produce some of its best cars were taken over for the German war effort. Sadly, all the factories were heavily bombed during this time.
Post war Peugeot
Following the Second World War, Peugeot had some major successes in terms of expanding the business. In 1948, Peugeot began producing cars again and introduced the 203 to its customers throughout Europe. The car manufacturer was then introduced to America in 1958 with huge numbers of motorists enjoying the brilliantly engineered and stylish motors.
A couple of decades later in 1974, Peugeot expanded the business even further and bought a 30% share of Citroën, taking over the company completely in 1975 making a joint company called Peugeot Sociètè Anonyme (PSA).
In the next decade, the car manufacturer launched its most successful model, the Peugeot 205. This car has set the way for other exciting and vastly popular models, making Peugeot one of the UK's favourite car brands.
With such an exhilarating history, there's no doubt that Peugeot will continue to succeed at everything it puts its hands to in the future, especially as the car producer is currently developing a diesel-electric hybird version of the Peugeot 307 which can reach a total of 80mpg. This is set to be a very economical vehicle that will impress many Peugeot car insurance customers.
