Like car insurance, car safety is paramount for any driver - but when a woman is pregnant, the issue becomes more important because mum also needs to take care of unborn babies.
Research by Loughborough University found that there is quite a high risk of losing the baby in car smashes - between 40 and 50 per cent likelihood if mothers suffer serious injuries.
For more minor car accidents, pregnancies can still be terminated, with the risk still running as high as five per cent.
But there is a good news side - the key safety factor to protecting mums-to-be and growing infants is to buckle up using seat belts - they save thousands of lives every year.
CoverGirl, the expert women's car cover firm, echoes the findings, advising that wearing seat belts while pregnant reduces the dangers and heartache of a pregnancy ending because, quite simply, a seat belt cuts the risk of injury.
A company spokeswoman said: "Statistics show that seat belts reduce injury risk to unborn children by up to 70 per cent."
It's an easy equation - when you are less likely to get hurt, so is your unborn baby.
How to wear a seatbelt when pregnant
Just follow the two-step safer seat belts guide below. A seat belt will protect a woman and her baby in a crash - there is no need to worry that wearing one will harm an unborn child.
A. Ensure the diagonal seat belt strap is between the breasts and place the strap around the side of the bump that is the baby.
B. The lap strap should fit under your bump and feel comfortable. It is too high if sitting above the belly button. Aim to ensure it covers as low as possible from hipbone to hipbone.
