Windscreen safety

Every year, a huge number of motorists in the UK put their lives at risk from a road accident and all because of a simple chip on their windscreens. Therefore, we at CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, the experts in motor insurance have created a useful guide on preventing and repairing chips to your windscreen.

Your windscreen is one of the most important aspects of your vehicle and so it makes sense to take care of it. If you notice a small chip or crack in the glass, don't leave it hoping that it will disappear, get it fixed as soon as possible.

Repairs
In a recent survey carried out by motor insurance experts, Privilege Car Insurance, a great deal of drivers admitted that they had ignored chipped windscreens in the past.

Ian Parker, managing director of Privilege Car Insurance, said: "By acting quickly when they notice a chip, motorists can save money as well as ensuring their car is safe. The longer a small crack or chip is left, the less likely it is to be repairable - and that means paying the excess towards the cost of a replacement."

If you don't want to make a claim on your motor insurance for a replacement screen inspect your windscreen regularly. If a chip is smaller than a £1 coin, it can often be repaired in around 20 minutes and will make the windscreen much stronger - limiting the risk of you suffering personal injuries if a road accident was to occur.

Winter months
During the winter months your windscreen is at a higher risk of developing larger cracks. With the cold, frosty mornings many of us think that a cup of warm water will clear our windscreens ready for that journey to work. However, if there is already a small chip in the glass, the warm water will work its way into the crack, freeze and increase the size of the chip.

Just remember, if you don't want to be making a claim on your motor insurance, don't use warm or hot water on your car first thing in the morning.

When trying to clear the ice off your windscreen, use an appropriate ice scraper. All too often, we eager motorists can pull out one of our credit cards, CD cases or even the kitchen spatula to get the freezing ice off our screens. If you're birthday is coming up, ask one of your friends to get you a funky ice scraper.

Whatever you do, make sure your windscreen is fully clear. By law the windscreen and mirrors of your vehicle should be clear, so no more travelling with a small peep hole, especially if you want to avoid the risk of making a motor insurance claim for a nasty accident.

RAC Auto Windscreens managing director, Bill Duffy, said: "Why put yourself and others at risk for the sake of getting up a few minutes earlier in the morning and investing a few pounds in an ice scraper and a can of de-icer. If you don't, it could be a hefty fine or worse still, a 10-year prison sentence if you cause death while driving."
