Top cars women love

When it comes to buying a new car, it's tough to know what to go for. Something small and manoeuvrable which will allow you to get a great woman's car insurance deal? Or something a little more indulgent that may stretch your budget a little but positively radiates elegance and style?

Recently, the folk at www.msn.co.uk carried out some research on women's car buying habits - a topic which naturally caught the interest of the car-loving ladies at CoverGirl. After reading the top 10 list, we had a look out the window into our car park.

There, we saw evidence that the research is pretty spot on. An astounding seven out of the ten cars listed below were parked in our modestly-sized car park, some models even appearing more than once.

The proof now gathered, we feel qualified to list the MSN top 10 cars women love - as proved by CoverGirl Car Insurance Services.

Volkswagen Golf
It's one of Europe's best selling cars - and no surprise because the Volkswagen Golf is, and has been for eons, a sound investment. But over and above all of that, the Golf has long drawn women to it because of its undeniable qualities; it feels safe, it feels reliable, it feels secure and it doesn't look like an intimidating drive. Golfs are a pleasure to own thanks to their high levels of build quality and the fact that they seem to mature rather than age.

Renault Clio
The Clio is the latest in a line of small Renault hatchbacks dating back to the Renault 5 of the early 1970s. The Clio line itself started in 1990 and in a little over a decade it has become Renault's most important model, appealing to a broad cross-section of people, but women especially. Like it or not, just as the "white van" is perceived to be the domain of Sun-reading, chauvinist men, so the Clio is seen as a "girls' car". They're cute; no wonder so many women choose to buy one.

MG TF
What happens when you give the MGF (over the years, one of Britain's best selling sports cars) a facelift? You get the MG TF; a combination of affordability (from £15,750 OTR) and great looks. MG Rover Group say, "The new TF fully embodies MG’s passion for producing a fun and driver-rewarding road car experience." What's more, no way can these cars be simply labelled as one for the boy racers - they ooze way more style than that. In a nutshell, that's why women love them; buying one is an immediate self-confidence boost.

Audi TT
Audi’s stylish TT appeals hugely to women. It's beautiful to look at with its unique lines, shape and attention to detail. This is what we want to see more of; not cars that look as if they've been designed to be instantly forgettable. Currently, TT residual values are amongst the highest for any road car, so buyers won't lose out when it's time to sell. Aesthetically, the TT is far more special than earlier Audi coupes. It has trendsetting looks that have made it a hit in cities throughout Europe. For the fashion-conscious, it's a great car to be seen in.

Jaguar XKR Convertible
The beautiful XKR Convertible's looks are simply to die for. This is a car you'd beg, borrow and steal for. In either convertible or coupe form, very little can compare to it if we're talking drop-dead-gorgeous. And we are. But more than that, it delivers breathtaking speed; 0 to 60 mph in around 5.2 seconds. If anyone thinks it's just men that want to put their foot down and blast off - think again...

MINI
If you like to be looked at, get a MINI. If you like attention, get a MINI. Any wonder women love MINIs so much? The new MINI turns as many heads as its illustrious predecessory: MINI looks sensational, drives brilliantly, is cheap to buy and if anything, their iconic status has increased. Have you seen the remake of Michael Caine's classic The Italian Job? Edward Norton and Mark Wahlberg may be headlining, but the MINI Cooper is the real star of the movie.

Volkswagen Beetle
Remember those silly Disney movies from the 1960s and 70s featuring a VW Beetle named "Herbie"? It drove by itself and it repeatedly saved the day (but it couldn't save the movies...) - proof (if any were needed) that the star appeal of the Beetle has been around forever. The New Beetle is a thoroughly modern, reliable car that retains the unique look of the original 1930s design. It ultra-curvy, retro-style body conceals an interior that wastes a lot of space, but it has charm, panache and charisma.

Mazda MX-5
The Mazda MX-5 is the realisation of a simple and beautiful idea; a classic, affordable and exciting roadster. Although the design has subtly changed over the years, its aerodynamic shape remains instantly recognisable. Electric windows and central locking are standard on all models but more importantly, drive it and you'll discover that the Mazda MX-5 is better than ever. High standards of safety and reliability are maintained but it just takes one look to see why any woman would love to own one...

Ford Fiesta
Practicality, economy, affordability - thy name is "Ford Fiesta". These cars are as stress-free as you’d expect one of the nation’s favourites to be. Fiestas don't cost a fortune to insure or maintain and many women love their compactness and ease-of-use. There’s consistent demand for Fiestas on the used market due to their popularity as first-choice motors. And as this is a Ford, repairs and servicing are not too expensive. It may not be a very exciting car, but women remain very impressed with it.

BMW Z3
This is the car James Bond drove in the 1995 movie "Goldeneye", much to the chagrin of die-hard Aston Martin fans. Without a doubt, women love this little beauty. It has the quintessential appeal and performance you'd expect of a sports car, plus a distinctive BMW aesthetic. Its charismatic charm and the ability to make it eye-catching to anyone who drives it makes it easy to see why women adore the Z3. We just can't wait until the new, improved Z4 hits the streets, soon...
