Top chick flicks

On days when the sun is shining, there is nothing better than taking a trip to the shops and splashing out on a pair of shoes, perhaps, or a stunning new dress for that party coming up in a few weeks. Read more about top shopping cities.

However, we do live in the UK and as we all know, those sunny days can be few and far between. There are times when going out is the last thing that you want to do because the weather is cold, windy or wet – or all three.

But don't worry, because the women at CoverGirl Car Insurance Services have the answer. We recommend curling up on the sofa with all the essentials: a girly movie, a bottle of wine, and, of course, some scrumptious Belgian choccy.

We have put together a list of our favourite chick flicks so you can sit back, relax and indulge in a little romance.

Dirty Dancing

If you are a disco dancing diva or a daddy's girl then this is the film for you. This 1987 cinematic hit is one of our favourite romantic movies and a whole generation of women have grown up watching it over and over and over again.

For those ladies who have missed out on this classic, it's about a family who go on holiday to a chintzy 1960s American hotel resort. After watching some of the resort's dancers in action, the youngest daughter, Baby (Jennifer Gray), decides that she wants to learn a few moves and in the process she manages to get down and dirty with love god extraordinaire Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze).

After you've seen Dirty Dancing the team here at CoverGirl Car Insurance Services guarantee that you will know every word to that Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes song and will be practising the steps to some of those fab routines all over the house. If you rent this you'll have the time of your life but remember "Nobody puts Baby in the corner!"

Bridget Jones's Diary

The tagline for the film reads: "It's Monday morning, Bridget has woken up with a headache, a hangover and her boss." This adaptation of the novel by Helen Fielding is a hoot.

It is the story of a hopelessly romantic 30-something called Bridget (Renee Zellweger) who's sick of being a "singleton" and feels she is fast approaching that stage in her life when she is going to die alone in London and be found three weeks later half eaten by an Alsatian.

As the film is based on the thoughts that Bridget records in her diary, the action takes place over the course of a year, the New Year's resolution for which is a quest to find Mr Right.

Along the way, Bridget's other personal battles include trying to shift a few pounds and trying to stay motivated in a dead-end thankless job. But she gets there in the end with the help of her trusty self-help books and her mates – journalist Shazza, city-worker Jude and ex-popstar Tom.

Even if the slightly obvious humour doesn't appeal, you must be without a pulse if you don't swoon at the English gent-style foppishness of Hugh Grant and Colin Firth. Chardonnays all round?

Pretty Woman

Now, this is fantastic urban fairy tale about a rich business man who falls in love with, well a working girl.

Vivian (Julia Roberts) can't believe her luck when she is picked up by Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) in his Lotus Esprit and taken back to his flashy hotel for a night in the penthouse suit.

But she quite literally walks off the street, into his life and steals his heart. The two develop a relationship and while Edward falls more deeply for Vivian she struggles in a world of opera, polo, posh dinners and etiquette, where she is clearly out of her depth.

Edward takes his Cinderella on a trip to the boutiques of Rodeo Drive to rid of her rags and transform her into an elegant princess. While her new appearance wins her some respect in high society, the girl inside remains unchanged and she soon has desires to return to her old, simple way of life.

But, you guessed it; they live happily ever after, just like all the best feel-good films.

Ghost

This 1990 chick-flick is the ultimate love story and will bring a tear to your eye without a shadow of a doubt.

Sam (Patrick Swayze) promised Molly (Demi Moore) that he would love and protect her forever and when he lost his life in a mugging that went wrong, the power of his love enabled him to stay on earth as a ghost so that he could watch over her.

He becomes frustrated that he can't communicate with his sweetheart and enlists the help of a medium, played very amusingly by Whoopi Goldberg, who reluctantly lets Molly know that Sam is still with her.

Eventually, revenge is seen on the murderous mugger and Sam is released to heaven.

And what can we say about that pottery scene? Well, it must go down as one the sauciest screen moments in history!
