We've all come to know the name that is Vauxhall and with so many of us buying cars from the manufacturer each year, it makes sense that we should take a look at its history and discover just how far the car company has come in the last hundred years.

Vauxhall is one of the most popular brands in the UK and the car manufacturer has secured a strong customer base over the years by providing vehicles that are both mechanically sound and built with style in mind. With so many people wanting to spend their hard earned cash on a Vauxhall, we at CoverGirl Car Insurance Services wanted to look at the developments that have made by the company since its first car went into production.

Where did it all begin?
Years before people were able to get online quotes for car insurance, Alex Wilson founded one of the UK's most significant car manufactures, Vauxhall. Originally called Alex and Wilson Company, then the Vauxhall Iron Works, the first ever model was produced in London in 1903, and unlike today's modern Corsa or Vectra, it was made without a reverse gear.

It was clear that Vauxhall would progress from its initial car designing to become one of the UK's all time greats and in 1905 premises of a factory were secured in Luton to carry out the majority of the company's vehicle production. Up until 1907, the company continued to work under the name Vauxhall Iron Works but it soon changed to Vauxhall Motors, a brand that we have all become familiar with as a sign of quality.

From 1925, Vauxhall customers across Europe saw an American influence in the latest models after the manufacturer was bought by General Motors for $2.5million. Leading up to the Second World War, Vauxhall car production was suspended as the company focused on building the Churchill Tank- a successful business quest that saw a total production of 5,600 vehicles.

Post war
Vauxhall launched itself again during the post-war period with the Viva, a car that became a popular choice amongst drivers during the 1960s who liked the model for its low running costs and reliability. The Viva continued to be a huge success until it ceased production in 1979, when a new, medium-sized hatchback was introduced to the market - the Vauxhall Astra.
During this period of the 1970s, a number of positive changes started to come about with the development of even sleeker models that could easily take on any on Vauxhall's competitors for quality and style.

In 1981 the successful MK2 Cavalier became a number one choice for many Vauxhall customers who wanted an alternative to the Asrtra hatchback. The 1980s also saw a number of other models introduced to the market including the 1983 Nova, the 1986 Carlton MK2 and the re-launch of the Cavalier in 1988, which had a much improved anti-rust resistance.

The new generation
Moving into the 1990s, a decade where online woman car insurance was made available millions, Vauxhall enthusiasts were able to get their hands on the new Cavalier. The car proved to be so popular that it became Britain's third most sought after vehicle. Moving on to the mid 90s, another re-launch of the Astra saw continuing success and the Cavalier continued to be a popular choice right up until it was replaced by the Vectra in 1995. By the turn of the century and with such excellent standards of manufacturing, Vauxhall was competing strongly with Ford with better sales than ever before.

The new millennium saw an even better success for Vauxhall with its updated Corsa in 2000 becoming voted as Britain's second most popular car. In 2004, we saw the re-launch of the fifth generation Astra, a car that won accreditation from all those in the motor industry and became Britain's second best selling car in 2005 and 2006.

With the stylish redesign of the Corsa at the end of 2006, and the second generation Vectra due to be launched in 2008, it can definitely be said that Vauxhall enthusiasts have lots to look forward to in the future.
