A look at Volkswagen's impressive history
The history of Volkswagen is indeed an intriguing one. From its early relationship with Adolf Hitler to its appearance in Disney's cult Herbie movies, there's a great deal more behind the VW badge than meets the eye. No matter what make of car your into, there's no doubt that everybody has heard of the VW Beetle, one of Volkswagen's most loved and sought after models. With its unique design, it has most definitely gone down in history as one of the greatest achievements in the motoring industry.

Volkswagen's connection with Adolf Hitler

the Beetle was actually a car devised by Adolf Hitler. Although the dictator
didn't know how to drive himself, he had a fond love for cars and in 1933
asked Ferdinand Porsche to build a car for the everyday man.
The vehicle that was eventually built in 1938 for the ordinary German driver became known as the Kdf-Wagen, later renamed the VW Käfer, or Beetle as we know it as today. In fact, Adolf had such an impact on the creation of the Beetle that the Type 1 Cabriolet was given to him as a present on his birthday in 1938.
Car production continued in the town of Kdf-Stadt right up until the Second World War when VW changed its production to military vehicles and created the Type 81 Kübewagen (Bucket car), a vehicle that was used heavily against the allies.
Volkswagen post-War
Following the Second World War, the car and the town where the vehicle
had been produced had their names changed to Volkswagen and Wolfsburg.
The period following the war was a very interesting one for VW thanks
to the Beetle, as it was this model that symbolised a new era of regeneration.
Moving into the 1950s, the Volkswagen Beetle was selling further afield across the Atlantic, with total sales in America reaching an incredible one million by 1955. This led the way for the development of future models in the 1960s including the Type 3 and Type 4 models.
Post hippy era
After The VW Beetle was made a massive hit in the 1960s with the successful
development of the Herbie films, VW went on to create even better models
during the following decade. In 1973, the Volkswagen Passat was developed
and marketed as a family car and was shortly followed by the creation
of the VW Golf in 1974 - one of the first successful front wheel drive
hatchbacks.
In 1975, the first Polo, which was in fact a rebadged version of the Audi 50, was introduced to the motoring world. By the time it ceased production in 1981, over 500,000 models had been sold. Ten years later and the manufacturer launched the third generation of the Golf, winning the prestigious title of European Car of the Year in 1992.
Volkswagen has continued to remain successful until this very day and has delighted in past achievements that include the relaunch of the new Beetle and the fifth generation Volkswagen Golf, which came runner-up to Fiat at the 2004 European Car of the Year Awards.
