A concerning number of female motorists are putting fashion before safety when it comes to their choice of shoes, according to woman car insurance provider Sheilas' Wheels.
Their recently published 'Safe Shoes' report showed that a staggering 11.5 million British women wear dangerously inappropriate footwear at the wheel, and one in ten of us have already had an accident or narrowly avoided one because of out-of-control heels or flip flops.
Yet in spite of this, almost a quarter (23 percent) admitted they wouldn't change into sensible shoes for driving even if they knew a trendier pair was putting their lives and motor insurance premiums at risk.
A Sheilas' Wheels spokeswoman said: "It's astonishing that so many women are putting themselves, their passengers and other drivers at risk by wearing the wrong shoe or no shoe at all whilst behind the wheel. Stilettos, sling-backs and strappy sandals aren't the sensible choice when it comes to controlling a car."
In response to the problem, boffins at the woman car insurance firm have come up with the so-called 'Sheila Driving Heel,' a classy pink-and-black stiletto that folds into a practical motorists pump at the touch of a button. For more details, see www.ilovesheilas.com
