New research from an online car insurance comparison site has revealed that men are twice as likely as women to drive without motor insurance.
When questioned by Moneysupermarket.com, 17% of male drivers admitted that they had taken to the roads without a valid car insurance policy.
Ladies, in comparison, were much more likely to consult a woman car insurance company before getting behind the wheel and less than 10% of those interviewed said that they had driven without motor insurance.
The researchers also found that gender wasn't the only factor that affects someone's likelihood to drive while uninsured. Age was also an important indicator, with 29% of motorists aged under 30 defaulting on young driver car insurance, compared to 12% of those aged between 30 and 50.
A spokesman for Moneysupermarket.com said: "Whilst most of these motorists may not consider themselves part of the uninsured driving problem, widely blamed by some major insurers as the cause behind their premium rises over recent years, it's important to realise anyone who drives without cover is breaking the law and poses a financial risk to themselves and other road users."
Lee-Anne Bass, spokesperson for woman car insurance company CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, said: "There is certainly a clear trend which shows that men and young drivers are most likely to drive without motor insurance.
"There are likely to be a number of reasons why ladies are the least likely group of road users to do so, including our less risking-taking nature and the low cost of women's car insurance deals available."
