For the average woman, car insurance at low rates is a breeze because of ladies' reputation for safe driving. However, there are always exceptions to the rule, and one female driver is unlikely to see any cheap motor insurance quotes any time soon after falling asleep at the wheel while drunk.
The 55-year-old lady, who lives in Bristol, was travelling down the M5 near Avonmouth when the incident occurred.
She was on her way to a job interview but was overcome by nerves so, while stuck in slow traffic on the motorway, she decided to take a few sips of whisky from a hip flask to calm herself.
The whisky apparently had more of an effect than she had expected and she promptly nodded off at the wheel of her Vauxhall Tigra. While she slumbered, a very long queue of traffic built up behind her stationary car, which was in the middle lane of the motorway.
The police arrived on the scene and managed to get the Tigra to the side of the road. The lady didn't seem bothered by their presence, however, and simply curled up on the grass verge to continue her snooze.
She pleaded guilty to a charge of drink driving and attended North Avon Magistrates' Court, which imposed an interim driving ban pending further medical reports.
A spokesperson for the Campaign Against Drinking and Driving (CADD) was very critical of the woman's actions, saying, "If you are tired, you shouldn't be behind the wheel. If you are under the influence, you shouldn't be behind the wheel.
"And if you are both, you certainly shouldn't be behind the wheel of what is a lethal weapon."
Gemma Turner, of the woman car insurance company CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, echoed the CADD spokesperson's comments, saying: "This lady's actions caused absolutely chaos on the roads and it was fortunate that no accidents occurred as a result."
