Although car insurance for women is cheap because ladies are less likely to have accidents, recent research has shown that many female drivers are unaware of the drink drive limit.
The study, which was carried out by Tickbox.net on behalf of Carrentals.co.uk, revealed that 80% of UK motorists don't know how much alcohol they can drink without breaking the limit. It also found that women are less clued up on drink drive laws than men and many may be risking their ladies' car insurance unknowingly.
Another aspect of the research focused on whether the law on drink driving should be changed to zero tolerance so that there will be no confusion over exact limits.
Lady drivers were found to be much more in favour of this than men, with 82% of female drivers supporting this move compared to 64% of male motorists.
A spokesperson for Carrentals.co.uk said: "The research highlights the continued danger that exists from drink driving. Everyone knows the risks involved but for some reason many drivers still think they can have a drink safely.
"The reality is that the only truly safe approach is to say no to any alcohol - something which the majority of drivers in the survey supported to become law."
Lee-Anne Bass, CoverGirl Car Insurance Services' expert in car insurance for women, said: "The number of people who have been caught drink driving rate over Christmas hasn't changed much in the last few years.
"Perhaps this is because of the obvious confusion that the drink drive limit causes amongst drivers. Maybe a zero tolerance approach is the only answer."
