Woman's car insurance won't cover traffic light crash

Normally, women's car insurance claims don't get any more interesting than the odd bump or scrape in a car park, which is why ladies get such cheap motor insurance.

However, one lady in America could make a slightly more off the wall claim to her women's car insurance company.

The woman, who comes from Texas, had been driving her car down a state highway just after Christmas 2006. As she reached a junction, she felt a massive object hit her car, causing severe damage to her windscreen and bonnet.

Afterwards she commented: "I wasn't aware it was a traffic light at the time..I thought it might have been a big rock."

According to witnesses, a traffic light had apparently fallen over just as the unfortunate lady's car was passing under it, causing more than $1,000 of damage.

She contacted the Texas Department of Transportation (DoT), confident that they would pay for repairs to her damaged car. However, the agency refused to pay the bill as it did not accept liability for the accident.

It does not appear that her car insurance will cover the repairs and as she cannot afford to pay for them upfront, she is currently having to use a borrowed vehicle until the dispute with the DoT is resolved.
